Preventing Slip and Falls when barefoot

The National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI), after extensive studies and research, recommends the following for surfaces that can become wet and that are walked on and utilized barefoot:

  1. A surface with a wet dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) of 0.60+ results in high traction and low probability of wet barefoot slipping.

  2. Surface with 0.40 - 0.59 DCOF results in moderate traction and an elevated probability of wet barefoot slipping. NFSI recommends using traction enhancing products.

  3. A surface with less than a 0.40 DCOF results in low traction and a high probability of wet barefoot slipping. Recommendation to replace surface or treat with traction enhancing product.

These results and recommendations apply to facilities that include showers, bathtubs, locker rooms, pools, jacuzzis, saunas, steam rooms, patios, and various other surfaces that can become wet and are likely to be walked on barefoot.

Country clubs, hotels, hospitals, fitness centers, and assisted living facilities should be especially aware of this recommendation and take proactive action to reduce the risk of slip and falls.

By doing so, businesses can ensure safety and show proof of duty of care.

A Safeguard Floors non-slip treatment:

  1. Raises DCOF to 0.70+

  2. Is long-lasting and guaranteed for 1 year

  3. Is not a sealant or etching

  4. Requires no changing to existing cleaning regimen

  5. The only treatment endorsed by Daltile - #1 manufacturer of U.S. tiles
